Sanjay, an ambitious, 27 years old, young executive with an aspiration to climb up the corporate ladder, willing to put in whatever it took to realize it. Three years into his assignment, he kept ignoring the weight he was putting on, till exhaustion, thirst, frequent urination and a urinary tract infection appeared and he had to visit a physician, only to be diagnosed with hyperglycemia (High Blood Sugar), hypertriglyceridemia (Abnormal lipid profile) and hypertension (High Blood Pressure).
Swaraj, A businessman in his forties, always believed in enjoying life and late night partying, alcohol, inactive daily routine and reckless consumption of fried/junk food. Suddenly experiencing discomfort in his left shoulder and nausea, he ended up at a hospital and diagnosed with dyslipidemia and abnormally high blood pressure and a clogged artery.
These are just two examples of how ignorance, overconfidence, living for the day and negligence can potentially turn into a full blown health crisis. Irrespective of whether diagnosis happens during a routine check up or otherwise, the first reactions to such diagnosis usually are common in most people, albeit the magnitude may vary;
- Fear; Expecting a routine check, first diagnosis instills fear leading to withdrawal, and stress.
- Repentance; Associating diagnosis with underlying causes, guilt and remorse are strongly felt emotions.
- Anxiety; This is the most commonly felt emotion in anticipation of the unknown. ‘All or nothing’ behavior is quite common (Avoiding food, exercising too much etc…)
- Self blame; It is common to witness this emotion with regret.
- Overconfidence; Quite a few, if not all, exhibit arrogance and brazenness about their abilities and resources to overcome with their own means. They are the most vulnerable lot who ignore advised medicinal, dietary and other regimes and focus on self medication, alternate therapies and free floating advice’s from friends and family.
- Acceptance; Those who accept facts and realistically look at possibilities of how best they can manage it under professional supervision, or ,by gaining knowledge tend to do well in the long term.
While the first four are most common, temporary emotions and subside quickly over few days, the other two make a big difference over time in causing or preventing complications.
Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of ‘Conditions’ that requires some urgent and some long term measures to be managed, reversed or even remit in quite a few cases. Comprehensive understanding about underlying causes, medicinal regime, bio markers, non medicinal interventions like diet and nutrition can help in reducing anxiety, dependence on medications and frequency of physician visits.
