I have been wondering for last few years, labelling what has been the common thread that was visible among a vast majority. It took me to arrive at only one word, and that is “Ridicule”. This is one such negative behavior that tries to run down someone else’s efforts or results and dilutes it by creating a preconceived perceptual block to avoid break their internal inhibitions. These may be out of complexes, insecurities or comfort zones that people tend to oversee the results of being appreciative of any such interpersonal opportunities.
For instance, as a precondition for accepting health coaching assignments, I ask for previous diagnostic test reports and what surprises me is that most haven’t even got a routine health check done ever, or a long time in the past despite repeated reminders by family physicians and friends.
The most common response is ‘will cross the bridge when we reach it..’ or ‘will do after the festival..Let me enjoy till then..’, or ‘I know nothing can go wrong with me..’. Such individuals run over any sane advice coming inward till they get a hint of what lies ahead and then fear takes over.
Such dysfunction tends to build a strong and sticky wall as a barrier to learning and change, even if it were to be beneficial for such individuals. These become repetitive reactions and many a times, knowing that ridiculing shall not do any good, they still end up doing it, for; their subconscious minds get trained to respond like that. This applies equally to social, financial and professional spheres seamlessly.
Rampant obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome are gaining pandemic proportions due to excessive gluttony and sloth despite tons of information about consequences floating around on mainstream and social media. We find more long term lifestyle related ailments despite growing number of gyms, aerobic centers, health spas, protein and supplement retailers, hospitals and drug discoveries. For every ill, there is a pill and thus overrated confidence about managing health, and continuing with indulgences and a sedentary lifestyle full of stress, depression, laziness, and ignorant over consumption. Such individuals are most likely to be non compliant with serious medical advice by the health practitioner even post diagnosis and prescribed medical regime.
Such ridiculing behavior is reflected in casual body language, overconfidence, avoidance and prematured judgment or inferences. It is imperative to be mindful of such harmful behavior and work consciously to manage them well in time before they begin to inflict damage.
