Patience – A conquering virtue

It is easier to find men who would volunteer to die, than to find those who are willing to endure pain with patience” – Julius Caesar

It is common to see people exhibiting extreme comportment’s. Some do not care, or dare, to change till something externally forces them to change, while the others who are anxious for change and expect to change behaviors faster than anything they have done in life. I experience both, frequently with clients who procrastinate before they mend ways and others who exhibit ‘all or nothing’ syndrome. Such behaviors are common and cut across domains, be it business, personal, social or health.

While the former do not initiate actions at all, waiting for the self-defined ‘opportune’ time, the latter anxious to tame, searching for short cuts and facing disappointments, only to give up on the change effort faster. In my health coaching practice, I often see extremes of mindless gluttony on one hand, waiting for parameters to go out of control, and unsustainable starvation on the other hand.

Change is a slow process, and one attempts to change sticky patterns developed over time, that have been rehearsed, reinforced and lived with, and perfected over long time, whether productive or dysfunctional. They are tried, tested and considered ever relevant as they pierce into comfort zones, and become what we call, hardened beliefs.

It is imperative to be patient with change, and that requires conscious effort, consistent determination, high awareness, measurement and self- control. Change breaks comfort zones, causes anxiety in many aspects (Physical, mental, emotional, social and sometimes financial) and pushes one back very hard towards the comfort zone, which builds a vicious cycle.

Only those who can be patient and persevere through the process of change can successfully modify the pre-existing subconscious script. Change requires time. Reconciliation and realistic goals build higher possibilities of success. It is only the effort zone that people need to navigate with perseverance and practice.

Only those who have patience to do simple things perfectly ever acquire the skill to do difficult things easily. Need help in navigating through changes? visit www.alokpurohit.com
